Gardening 101

Gardening can be a relaxing hobby. If you have children, they will love gardening with you. If not, they can still help you plant your favorite flowers, vegetables, fruits and herbs. Here are some gardening tips for families. You will find that gardening makes you feel good and improves your life in a number of ways.

* Follow the sun. All edible crops, including most fruits, vegetables, and herbs, need between 6 and 8 hours of sunlight to prosper. Many gardeners are surprised by how much variety comes up in their gardens when they follow the “sun is always in the garden” rule. Be sure to plant fruit trees or shrubs that enjoy bright sunlight and shade from nearby shrubs or trees.

* Choose plants that grow slowly. Some gardeners mistakenly believe that larger plants are faster to grow. This may not be true in the long term. But most of all, pick plants that do well in your climate zone. A gardener in a warmer zone should use plants that are not exposed to the afternoon heat as much as those who live in a colder region.

* Don’t stress yourself out. Gardening requires dedication, so it’s okay to take a break from the gardening grind occasionally. Scheduling time for gardening in your free time allows a gardener to let off the hose. The more time you spend tending to your gardens, the more healthy and abundant your garden will become. You will also be better prepared to deal with the unexpected when the time comes.

* Don’t forget the soil. Good gardens begin with healthy soil. Most plants won’t survive if they are not given the proper nutrients and water to grow in. Soil type, light/aerial conditioning, fertilizer and watering all play an important role in the health and productivity of your plants.
