Common Gardening Words

A garden is a place to grow plants and enjoy nature. A garden can be a small patch of green that is planted and nurtured to produce flowers or vegetables. Gardening is a fun and rewarding hobby for the average person. But there are many words that are associated with the garden and knowing them can help you have a more enjoyable experience.

A few common gardening words are:

Garden Tools – Tools used for digging, pruning, cutting, weeding, etc. Some examples are hoe, trowel, rake, shovel, and wheelbarrow.

Plants – Any living thing that grows or lives in the soil or air. Some examples are ferns, flowers, trees, and herbs. Gardening is a great way to get some exercise, fresh air, and enjoy the outdoors. Gardening can also be a therapeutic activity for those who are stressed or depressed.

Flower Gardening – A type of garden that is designed for the enjoyment of flowers. It usually features a variety of colors and fragrances. Gardeners often use flower gardens to express their artistic side.

Bonsai – A form of miniature tree made by careful root and stem pruning. This art is based on the principles of Japanese culture and philosophy.

Bottle Gardening – A glass container that is used to grow plants, often aquatic plants. It is often referred to as a terrarium. This is a popular alternative to an aquarium.

Fertilizer – A substance that is added to the soil to help it to maintain or improve its health and appearance. It is also used to supply the needed nutrients for plant growth. Some common fertilizers are compost, manure, and rock phosphate.

Soil pH – A measure of the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. If the soil is acidic it will have a lower number. If it is alkaline it will have a higher number.

Germination – The process of a seed beginning to grow.

Geotropism – The tendency of parts of the plant to respond to gravity, for example roots growing downward and leaves upward.

Garden Beds – A group of beds that are planted together and are often used for annual flowers. A popular technique is to plant them so that there is a continuous display of color throughout the season.

Beneficial Insect – An insect that is helpful in the garden by improving the condition of the soil, going after harmful insects and pollinating plants. Some common beneficial insects are ladybugs and earthworms.

Wide Row Gardening – A method of planting vegetables or cutting flowers by using rows that are two to three feet wide instead of single file. This allows for more efficient spacing of the plants.

Watering Can – A metal or plastic can with a long spout that is used to water the garden by hand. It is a very useful tool in the garden for frequent watering needs. Watering cans are available in a variety of sizes and styles.
